TOTAL John W. Broaaart John W. Broaaart Chief. Division of Land AcquisiUon Indiana Department of Highways by OTTIS L. SAULS "Iam the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life (or the sheep.
John 10:11 Tre word "shepherd" is one of the most beautiful and meaningful words in Scripture. When our Lord wanted to picture His infi- Jiite, divine love for us, He put it all into five words. "I am the good shepherd." No other words can give us as perfect a portrait of Jesus as these. The oriental shepherd, whom Jesus has in mind, was in a class himself. His flock was small dozen sheep, more or less.
The shepherd lived with his sheep, morning, noon and nig(it. Each sheep has its own name, like a pet dog, and responded to its name. As the shepherd walked along, he talked with his sheep, and they knew his voice. Above in the heart of the true shepherd there was a love fQA-his srieep similar to a mother's love for her child, or a father's love for his children, In fact, many an oriental shepherd had flo other just, his sheep: and he was more devoted to his sheep than many parents, ancient or mbd-' em. to their children.
They occu pied 100 percent of his time, his attention, his efforts. Such a shepherd was totally committed to the care and pro tection of his sheep. 'When his sheep were attacked by a lion, or a bear, a robber, or a band of robbers, something which hap pened quite frequently, the shepherd fought to protect his sheep as long as he had an ounce of life and strength left. In fact. many a shepherd lost his life.
fighting to save his sheep. This is what Jesus meant when He said, "I am the good shepherd. For that is exactly the relationship that exists be tween Him and us. He is totally committed to our care, our protection, and our welfare, and like an oriental shepherd. He is with us every moment of the day and night.
And for our special comfortvHe added, "The good shepherd gives up His life for His sheep." That's exactly what Jesus did. He died for our sins that we might live through Him. It is indeed a heart warming portrait which Jesus gives us when He K-eaUed Himself our Good Shepherd. Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, in all eternity we shall never be above to thank you sufficiently for Your infinite love to us and for all you have done for us. Amen.
